Easy Ways to Bring People Back to Your Website

One thing that I end up doing a lot is going to a website and really liking the content, but then totally forgetting about the website and never being able to find it again. While this is annoying to me, it can’t be a good thing for the site owner. With any website I’ve ever worked on or ran I always made sure there were options for the user to get updates about new posts on the site or alert them when there is something going on with the site. You don’t want someone going to your site and really enjoying it, but them never coming back. So here are 3 really easy things you can add to your site to bring people back and let them know what’s going on with the site.

RSS Feed
This is one thing every website should have. Most publishing platforms these days have RSS feeds built right in so you don’t even have to worry about anything. An RSS feed easily lists your latest posts on your website and user’s can read them in their favorite RSS reader. Even if you are not using something like Wordpress you can use RSS feeds. I was writing the RSS feed for ThinkComputers by hand up until we moved it over to Wordpress, it really isn’t hard at all.

E-mail Newsletter
E-mail newsletters have been around for as long as I remember, even before RSS feeds became really popular. An e-mail newsletter allows you to e-mail your readers the latest updated on your site and if you have something going on with your site you can e-mail them and let them know about it. Right now for ThinkComputers I have FeedBurner automatically running the e-mail newsletter, but there are quite a few other options out there. One of the best that I have seen is AWeber, so check them out!

Twitter
If you don’t know what Twitter is by now you must be living under a rock! If you have a website you really should have a Twitter account for that website. That way when people follow that account on Twitter you can let them know about new updates to your site and when you have something big going on. Twitter is so simple to use and setup there is no reason not to have a Twitter account for your website. Whenever a new post gets published on ThinkComputers I always post a tweet about it on the ThinkComputers twitter account.

I’ve known John Chow for quite some time now, even before he started blogging! The Website is Down – Sales Demolition

Back in 2008 I talked about the Website is Down video that was going around the internet. It was extremely funny, especially if you ever worked in IT or tech support before. After watching that video a few times I really never went back to the website, but the other day I thought of it and I went back to the website to see that they had 3 new videos. Each of them are pretty funny but their latest one Sales Demolition is extremely hilarious! You can check it out below…

The funny thing is things like this do happen all the time in companies and sales people are totally clueless how things work. I’m not so sure if IT people these days do fake virus attacks, but it is pretty funny. The thing I really like about these videos is that they are all real, which means they all use real IT programs and situations. No fake technology or fake procedures. This is why many people enjoy these videos because they can see themselves doing the same thing! This video was posted back in October, I really hope they have a new video soon! Why Are You Not On Foursquare!

If you haven’t heard of foursquare by now you should have! Foursquare is a location-based social networking site. I have actually been using location-based social networking sites for a while now. I first started with Brightkite, which was a service where I could check in places and share my location with people. Foursquare is much the same thing except they have added a sort of game aspect to it by giving you points for checking in places and awarding badges for doing certain things.

This game aspect is very fun and foursquare even provides weekly leader boards of the people with the most points in each city. Also if you have the most check in’s at a location you become the “Mayor” of that location. So every time someone goes to check in they will see your picture and be notified that you are the mayor. Badges also make the service very fun, think of them like achievements that you would get on Xbox. For example you get the Explorer Badge for checking into 25 different venues and the Bender Badge for checking in 4 nights in a row.

So how do you start using foursquare? Instead of me explaining it to you there is a great video showing you everything below.

I really enjoy foursquare and my friends and I always compete to see who can get the most points each week! It is also a great service to see where your friends are at, some nights I’m sitting here and see a lot of my friends checking in a certain place and I end up going there. I Hate My Roommate Launched!

As I said in my Rethinking 2010 post I wanted to work on more projects and this is my first one. Have you ever had a bad roommate? I sure have and I realized there really isn’t anywhere online to complain and rant about your bad roommate. So I decided to create I Hate My Roommate, I place where you can put your roommate on blast! I have collected a few stories from friends and I have quite a few of my own on that will be going up on the site in the coming weeks. The site really isn’t there to make any money or anything like that, just something fun to do.

Right now we have it so anyone can submit and story, but we also have a thing called Dear Roommate where you can write a short blurb about what is bothering you about your roommate currently. That is located on the side of the page.

The site is of course based on Wordpress so it is very easy to update and of course I can schedule posts, which makes things a whole lot easier. My friend Jack helped modify the layout and he did some extra coding for the site as well.

We really hope that the site catches on and we have people submitting stories to us everyday! Already many of our friends enjoy the site and I hope you do too! Have you checked out the Random Show?

Lately I haven’t had time to watch any TV or even listen to Podcast’s that I would listen to on a weekly basis. One thing I always try to do is listen or watch things that inspire me or make me want to do more. Surprisingly the Random Show is one of those things. The Random Show was put together by Kevin Rose and Tim Ferris where they talk about traveling, investing, technology, health etc. Kevin Rose is the founder of Digg.com, but you also may know him from The Screen Savers back in the old TechTV days. Tim Ferris is best know for his book The 4-Hour Workweek, he also has done some pretty amazing things in his life.

The show is those 2 sitting down and talking about pretty much anything, hence the name The Random Show. There really is no schedule of when new episodes will come out but there are 8 right now. Back in January I wrote an article on ThinkComputers about this year’s experience at CES, where companies were getting thrown out of hotels because they did not register with the CEA. I also reposted the article on this blog as I wanted to share my experience with all of the readers here. About a week after the article was posted I was contacted by the New York Times, they interviewed me for about 30 minutes about the article and my CES experience this year compared to last year. I was pretty cool being interviewed, I have only been interviewed 2 other times and it was by websites, not a big publication like the New York Times. Here is a quote from the article…

Bob Buskirk, who attended the electronics show and owns a Web site, ThinkComputers, that reviews hardware and software products, said he had “never been kicked out of a hotel room or even heard of companies being kicked out.” But this January, he said, two of his meetings were disrupted when the vendors were ejected by hotel security. “From what I’ve heard anecdotally, the amount of unlicensed vendors was certainlly the most it’s been in recent memory,” said Mr. Reese of the Sands.

Mr. Buskirk, who has been attending the show for five years, said that the show’s exhibits seemed to take up much less space this year. A spokeswoman for the association confirmed that the show’s size dropped to 1.4 million square feet of exhibit space.

The article is online here and appeared in print in the February 16th New York Edition of the Times. What is interesting is that most of the things I write are for a reason, a company sends me a product I have to write the review etc. I just felt that this was something that needed to be talked about and interestingly enough it got a lot of attention.

Backupify – Secure Your Online Life

I use many online services and I’m sure you do too. If you don’t think you do you probably at least have a Facebook account. So you put tons of photos on there, write long notes, get tagged in photos etc. What if for some reason Facebook crashed and you lost all of those images and other important things on Facebook? This is very unlikely to happen, but it is always good to have a backup of everything. This is where Backupify comes in. It’s a service that backs up many cloud services and for a limited time (till Jan 31st) the service is free.

The Services
So do you use a service that Backupify supports? They have all the big online services covered, Twitter, Facebook, FriendFeed, Gmail, Google Docs, Flickr, and Wordpress. Other services include Delicious, Zoho, Photobucket, Basecamp, Blogger and Hotmail. They also have support for YouTube, Xmarks, Rss Feeds, and Tumblr coming very soon.

How It Works
Getting Backupify setup is pretty simple. All you do is create an account and go to the settings tab. There it will list all of the services. Then you go ahead and click on what service you want to back up, enter your credentials and hit create. You can also select how often Backupify backs up your data. You can select weekly or daily backups and you can have them e-mail you a digest of what gets backed up.

So when Backupify starts backing up your files you can go in and see what all has been backed up. Just click on the Archives tab at the top then select your service. Depending on the service the files will be backed up differently. They make a nice PDF for Twitter updates. Other things are stored in .xml files or things like photos are simply backed up.

Sign up Fast
As I said Backupify is currently free, after January 31st the service will go back to a paid pricing structure. If you signup during this free period your account will remain free and unlimited. Even if they do not support your service you should sign up. They are planning on adding many services in the future and you can’t beat it since it’s free!
