i think john is right in that you have so much more flexibility to scale your own business much larger than if you were held back by a 40 hour a week job. if thinkcomputers is doing well, which i sense from what you tell me it is, then the success can speak for itself. try not to let it get to you. maybe he’s just pulling a calacanis

I love the rant Bob. I don’t know this Zach kid, but maybe he’s jealous of your success and your life in general. I know I envy anyone who makes a living online instead of sitting in a damn cubicle all day.

Wow, crazy story.

I can somewhat see both sides of the fence here. Before I monetized my tech site, I didn’t know the first thing about online advertising, so when I saw sites that had a ton of advertising, I thought it was pointless. I had tried doing a few ads but failed miserably, simply because I thought that because I didnt get clicks, nobody else did either, so why were these people running so many ads?

Now that I am on the other side of the fence, I totally do get it. The online ad business is just that, a business. What you know about it will directly convert to how much money you do or do not make.

Just like any job, anything could happen and you could “lose your job” at any time, so it is important to have an emergency fund in place to cover bills for a set amount of time while you get back on track, should it be server problems, loss of data, etc.

I used to think that “it must be nice to have parents pay for everything”… but now, I think differently. I would be a totally different person if my parents were wealthy and had paid for everything my entire life (school, housing, etc). I know people like this even today, and it really is kinda sad. Independence is great - the earlier the better, you are just getting a head-start on life and how it really works.

Suprising.. never thought he would say such things. It’s offensive to me too, considering I run online websites and I’m not going to college or have any other job, but we’re making it and loving our lives. Screw him. Let’s keep doing what makes us happy. He’s never had to work for what he has like us. Atleast we can be proud. If it doesn’t work out THEN we will worry about it. We’re still very young. I love you. Keep your head high!

He’s jealous of you for making money on the internet. Your jealous of him for having his parents give him everything. What’s the difference?

I agree with you though. Many people make money on the internet…what makes him/her less of a businessman than one who owns a restaurant, sells stocks, etc. It’s all about making money, just through different mediums.

Seem to me he is missing is old friend and just wrote something to get your attention , nothing to be taken seriously … When one is successfull , you usually lost touch with old friends and old crowds.
Sometime they have weird ways to cope with it.

I disagree with part of your post , you want people telling you how to run your business , you just don’t want people attacking it or putting your effort down without merits or a serious explanation. You want people like John Chow telling you how to improve your site and ads revenue , you want people like Nate Whitehill discussing the designs , you want Shawn Knight and Stephen Fung to give you a heads up on a cool technology and to participate on it , ETC , ETC , ETC …

I wouldn’t even worry about what he’s saying because it’s not worth your time. He just doesn’t understand “business” and “internet”.

And now? You both bad-mouthed each other. No difference between you and him at this point. If his parents never taught him the right values, how shall he know? Certain things should never put in writing in my opinion. Talk about it, think about it - but writing should be a big no, no in my opinion (at least on this specific blog).

I’d have to say that jealousy is a factor. Personally, it would be nice not to have to work for someone else 40 hours a week, but I don’t really envy the 100 or so hours a week you put into Think and your blog.
