Magazine Advertising

I really do not read magazines, but the other day I picked up a Wired magazine. Looking through it I kind of wish I didn’t. Almost half of the magazine was advertisements! The first 11 pages of the magazine were advertisements. I really don’t know that much about magazine advertising, but I guess these ads don’t sell for that much because these magazine companies need to put so many in the magazine. It is really annoying when there is a full page ad in between an article you are reading. Web advertising like Google, Yahoo, or similar ad companies is not even that intrusive. These full page ads are like big pop-ups on a webpage! So it’s like going to a webpage and having 10 pop-ups come up before you can even read anything! Going through the entire magazine there were 75 full page ads out of 182 pages. This is around 41%! That does not include smaller quarter-page and half-page ads, which there were quite a few. I guess you can see why a lot of people prefer to read things online, there are some ads, but there are a hell of a lot less and they are way less intrusive!

I don’t read magazines much either, but I picked up a copy of GQ (Gentlemen’s Quarterly)..most of the first 100-130 pages were advertisements..and then the rest of the magazine was mostly advertisements..

I don’t like magazines much anymore, such crappy content!!

After reader that I thought it sounded terrible and don’t remember seeing so many ads in mine but I’ve just checked …39 full pages out of 130 pages which is 30%. At least 10 of those were at the back though which isn’t quite so bad.

First 11 pages in a magazine doesn’t give a very good impression!

I still read magazines as I do enough stuff online, and it’s nice to read something in print for once.

What you don’t realize is that Wired magazine costs $12.00 a year to subscribe to, which is much less than other magazines with the same content.

Wired operates with the idea that the magazine is cheap, but there will be a lot of ads…Even with the ads, you’re getting 70+ pages of conent (for a dollar an issue).

It’s their business model - and it’s working.

I don’t mind the ads though tbh, some of them are quite interesting :P

I canceled my Maximum PC subscription partially because of the overabundance of ads. That, and they still use a CD to distribute their software, so there’s almost nothing on it.

Magazines are a dying breed. I’m surprised anyone still buys them when you can get the same information online, when it breaks, and for free.

I think Cosmo is around 50%, maybe more. But I don’t really mind. The reason I pick up Cosmo every month is to see what’s new, and the ads are pretty “targeted” I would say.
I guess it’s different for tech related magazines.
