My 20 Hour Work Week

As I said before I have started to log my hours. The main reason for this is because I feel like I’m not getting enough work done. So what better way to see if I’m actually doing work than to log my hours. So over the past week I setup an excel sheet to log my hours (If anyone has a better method please let me know, excel is a pain!). Now this is over a 7 day period not the normal 5 day work week most of you are used to. Here is a day to day breakdown of the hours I worked.

Monday: 2 hours
Tuesday: 4 hours 15 minutes
Wednesday: 2 hours 28 minutes
Thursday: 4 hours
Friday: 4 hours
Saturday: 0 hours
Sunday: 4 hours

Total Worked: 20 hours 43 minutes

After seeing how much I worked in a 7 day work week I was very disappointed in myself. When I had a real job I worked anywhere from 30-50 hours in a 5 day work week!

Reasons For Not Working as Much
Well the main reason for not working as much is that I haven’t had a lot of motivation. That has a lot to do getting enough sleep and keeping a good schedule. I recently made a post about how being healthy helps you be productive and it really does. When you don’t get enough sleep or are not eating right it can really hurt your performance. Also I am very lazy, something I have been trying to remedy. All my life I’ve for the most part done what I need to get by, not try to do more.

Goals For This Week
This week my goal is at least 25 hours, but I do hope to do more, I just don’t want to set the goal to high and then be disappointed in myself. I have been doing a lot of right things already this week. I have been on a great schedule, eating 3 meals a day, and I’m motivated. Hopefully this week will be a good one, it already started off good with the front page Digg!

Twenty hours isn’t too bad, but who knows if you’d be making more money with more hours put in?

Consider my status as a full-time student, 30+ hours at Buffalo Wild Wings, and whatever I do for my websites. Not to mention the girlfriend.

Heh. Fun times, I guess.

I agree that logging your hours can be very helpful, but don’t let it get you down if you work fewer hours than when you had a conventional F/T job. The key is to work smarter, not longer. In recent months, my actual number of hours has remained about the same, but my hourly rate (total income divided by hours actually worked) has gone up.

Here I tought my occasional, “stop slacking” messages on MSN would help you :)

Heheh you are braver than I am; I don’t even want to consider this idea because I know it will only get me down when I realize how little work I probably actually accomplish in a week.

i realised i spent more than 6 hours a day, but then i realised not all 6 hours were used for working online, but surfing other sites and watching videos, maybe i spend 1 hour per day, ashamed.

I think the main reason for low hours is a lack of accountability. With working for your self, mainly by yourself with no one to report to there is only motivation that keeps you going and when that goes you stop. I bet when you visit a trade show you put in more then average hours looking around, photographing things and then writing up about them.

If we take a full time job, or working self employed/contracting for someone else as an example then you are accountable to someone such as meeting a dead line, or completing tasks they gave you.

In my regular job I provide support for a network of computers across Europe, the US and Mexico. I need to act as soon as I get a call about something and cannot choose to just say I will sort it tomorrow. Thats because its in my contract and in the contract with our clients that they get a certain response time. I would loose my job if I had a history of not responding for a week.

So I am guessing Bob that you do not have to report to someone. I guess Ashley could always give you the evil eyes and tell you to get on with something, but it isnt the same as having a responsibility with someone following up on you saying “if this isnt done you are fired”.

So… If I were you and was going through a low patch of motivation I would probably try set up a more rigid structure with a good nights sleep at regular hours (not 3am to 1pm). Maybe get to bed for 11, up at 7, run for an hour, shower, breakfast etc… Youd have loads more energy to get stuff done. Oversleeping and bad sleeping is a killer. I know when I get up at 7am every morning it kills me to get up, but I have more energy through the day. When I sleep in till 10 or 12 I get up easier but feel dead for the rest of the day.

Anyway, thats just my 2p worth ;)

It can be really hard to work at home initially… I am trying to adapt too… Though I might spend almost the whole day and night working, my only really efficient period is probably only 20% of the whole day!
