Anyone can tell you that you will make a lot more money by selling ads on your sites direct and it’s true. The reason John bought the ads was I was telling him that Google was not performing well at all on my blog and that I was going to take it off. After I told him how much it was making me he made an offer for the spot and I didn’t hesitate to take it! It was a lot more than what the Google ads would have earned me!
After selling that ad I am thinking about offering a few other ad placements on the blog. I have a few ideas, but I wanted to know what you people thought about that idea. I want to try to roll out the new ad placements by early next month. Although for them to sell I have to keep my posting up! Let me know your thoughts, thanks!

Sounds great! I wish JC could’ve done that for me.

All John did for me was make me buy a $50 burger

Good Deal. Try to lock-in long-term rates/contracts to secure the income. On the other spots you might want to use something OpenAds and offer 3-5 spots. You make less per advertiser, but probably more than what 1 single advertiser would pay.

In one of my ten year old site, long before AdSense, I used to run my own adserver to provide click through and impressions stats. I wrote a program in perl ten years ago when I started the site. I then switched to open source php ads (I think they changed to open ad or some thing like that).
When AdSense started, a sales rep from their New York office used to call me almost every month for placing AdSense on my site. I used to just politely evade him.
After almost one year I though I would try it. And I did.
I think I can sell all my ad spaces and get even a little more than what I make from adsense. But it is too much work.
For AdSense, I don’t have to work on the ad revenue part of the business.
My experience tell me that running one’s own adserver is lots of work, unless it is completely automated, e.g. advertisers sign up, pay, upload banners or text, and the gets displayed on your page.

I know I have clicked the link many times myself to get go to his blog. This is definitely an attractive ad mostly because it has John Chow trying to kill a stuffed panda.
