Some People Just Don’t Get It
- 16 Comments... What do you have to say?
Man I always tell people doing internet work is not as simple as it seems. Yeah I make my own hours and yeah I work from home, but I DO have to put in a lot of hours of work to make the money that I do. I hate the people that think they can just put some ads on a site and make money. It’s a lot more than that!
Don’t Overdo Your Ads – Don’t plaster tons of ads all over your site. Do I really want to read a site where all I see is ads? If you are starting a new site just put a few ads on the site and see how they perform. They you can ad more ads in the future if needed.
Good ad Placement – Ad placement is very crucial. If you are running ads like Google Adsense or YPN the best ad placement is actually inside an article. You want you ads to be visible to the reader so they will click on them. There is no point to having ads on your site if no one is clicking them.
Have a good template / layout – Good layouts almost all the time make for better ad placement, which in turn means you will have better earnings. A lot of layouts have predetermined ad placements spots that are perfect for ads. When I redesigned ThinkComputers I made a strict ad placement for TTZ ads and I saw a 300% increase in my TTZ earnings. And it was well worth it, I was able to payoff the cost of the redesign the next month. The 2 biggest things you want when looking for a template or layout is that it is fixed width, and is wide enough where you can place an ad in the text and it won’t take up the whole page.
Always Be Tweaking – You should always be tweaking your ads. There are tons of simple little things you can do like changing ad colors or sizes to try to see what works better for you. You should never stick with one type of ad and leave it there, unless it’s making you a ton of money. Change things up and see what works best.
Good luck in making money online everyone! Don’t make the mistake this guy did, actually research, tweak, and see what works best for you!

Some people are just ignorant pricks who think everything in life comes easy. But once they fail, they don’t realize what they need to succeed, thus they probably will always be a failure.

My pay is a sincere comment. Someone who thought my post was funny, or meaningful, or educational. Maybe that could transfer into money someday. I think one should have something worthwhile in the blog to expect to make any money. If you have that core, marketing that should be a cinch. If you don’t have it, no amount of marketing is gonna bring in profits. My 2 cents.

Well said Bob,
if you don’t mind could you email me the competitor’s URL.

Are we suppose to feel sorry for you because your too cheap and lazy to integrate your site into a CMS?
Boo hoo, your work is hard because your make it hard.

haha, goto http://www.thinkgaming.org same layout as ThinkComputers, and hey look it’s using wordpress. Actually ThinkComputers would make less money if it used wordpress because the strict in-article ad placements would not be there. But thanks for the comment

You can place ads in wherever you want with wordpress.
As for thinkgaming, tell me it’s not substantially easier to update
TC can make the same money it does now and be easier to run if you put some effort into it, and even that effort is nothing compared to time you will save.

actually the ad placement I’m talking about is the block above every review. Yes I can put this block in wordpress, but I cannot change the ad that it displays, it would have to be the same ad each time.
Also if I put the actual ad in the post itself it would show up on the main page and I don’t want that

You can get someone to code that ability for you. But maybe running a business efficiently isn’t of concern to you.
My first thought was to laugh , because you never take someone who say I want 25% of the company based on doing is job seriously
, now someone who bring in more cash , and want to share a new idea with you on your site its another thing.
On second thought , you need to start to draw some legal paper to protect your brand , product and niche market from your own employee , seriously have them sign a contract that state they cant work for the competition or start a similar website will working for you and can’t start there own similar website inside 5 - 10 years , that any related website must be discussed with you and that you have a first hand at joint ownership with them first on any related website they decide to create.
This make them want to work harder for you. Also if one take Flickr as an example sometime the related project can become bigger then the main projects , you also don’t want to make them feel trapped.
If they don’t , you just don’t want to work with them and invest your precious time with them , in training them and giving them insider advice.
Thirdly , is the guy a good reviewer ? If he his and beside is ego trip due to being young and naive he is generally not an ass and that you don’t mind working with him again , I would offer him two thing :
Is old job back for less money , I would also offer to buy is website for say 200$ plus 5% of every future Ads/publicity earning for 2 year. Why you ask ? You grow your network of website and become more interesting to your advertiser and you can show them that your growing in the same segment , you can also test new idea there that you can import back to your main website if they work without having to jeopardize your main website earnings and community on testing new idea.
Just some food for thoughts …

I cant see anybody signing a contract that forbids them for 5 - 10 years for doing something they are trained to do. Contracts are good and needed, but they dont need to be that strict.

In real R&D its usually for life …
1) Money ( salary above 600k )
2) Resource ( Labs , materials , patents , product )
3) Need to pay the bills
etc …
Training an employee as multiple cost , you don’t want it to serve others or see them use your technique against you. Contract are not good or needed , they are a necessary evil in today’s world.
Ex-employee are the #1 reason for the creation of direct competition.
BoB is laughing now , but imagine if the guy had stolen all is client list , most of is community and is advertiser who now said they did not see the need to pay for advertisement or send hardware to a site with less trafic …
There are tons of book on the Employee threat subject :

I think you make some valid points, but I am not sure any of this applies to the type of business that Bob runs.
There are several other tech sites out there on the net - this is not something new and revolutionary that will overtake the market on its own.
Also, I would hope that Bob keeps his sponsor contact information to himself. I’m not saying anything bad about people that work for him, but I never share my contact info. with my writers. Its just part of my job, as the primary contact person between my site and sponsors. There is no need for writers to handle this duty on their own.

This is ThinkComputers and ThinkGaming !!! You dare say something irrespectful like it’s just another tech site !!!
You get trown into the pit !

You know is stats is bigger then your’s
( totally unrelated just saw this new tool and decide to try it ).
Seriously , employee risk management and seeing them as the threat/ally they are is a good thing. You want your employee to commit for a long time and contribute at there best and be respectful and grateful of the chance they get to work on your professionnal website. Its a worst case scenario made for thinking , I guess it did hit a cord with you. As it did with me , a bit unrelated to what Bob wanted to discuss do ( sorry Bob ). I usually defend my stated position with the best possible scenario , I like win - win situation.
Not everyone work the same way or think the same either
Hey , if the person scream 5 years are you crazy 2 is the norm , you usually take two … If the person say nothing you make sure they understand what it means and initial it , some people want to work there entire life at there dream jobs and will accept any term. Each case scenario is different as much as each employee is different.
Pro gets contract to play in the big league to retain there services , are your employee pro enough to deserve a contract ? … Its also a good test to see how committed they are.
just my 2 cents CAD. Like I said food for thought.
