Why Not Strive For More

I know not everyone can be self-made millionaires, but so many people can do something about their current situation. So many people that I know constantly complain about how much their job sucks, how they are not making enough money, and even just how they are unhappy with their situation. Out of all these people I would say 75% of them are doing nothing about it. Why not strive for more?

A few years ago my life was hell. I was a full time student at Robert Morris University, worked 30+ hours at an insurance company, and was running ThinkComputers. I barely had time for anything. The thing that kept me going was the thing that I was most interested in, ThinkComputers. Now it is what I am doing full time. All the extra time I had I would work on the site. During my break at work, in between classes at school, and before I went to bed a night. I knew I could make something out of the site that would help me with my current situation and it really did. I added some ads to the site and started updating it more frequently. This of course brought more traffic to the site which in-turn gave me some extra income. Because of this extra income I did not have to work as many hours at the insurance company. From there I kept on working and now I am doing ThinkComputers full time and it is paying the bills.

So why do so many people just sit around and complain about their current situation? I’m really not sure, but here are some thoughts.

Laziness – This is probably the biggest reason why people do nothing for themselves. Some people come home from work and just sit around. And for them it is to hard to try to do anything that might help them out. Or these people would rather do other activities like video games, drinking, etc instead of helping themselves. What they don’t realize is they would have much more time for those activities if they would do something for themselves and get out of the situation that they are in.

Dependent on someone else – I see this a lot with younger people. They are living at home with their parents and their parents pay for most things so they are satisfied with the way things are going. So if they have free food and a roof over their head then why would they want to change things? These people really need a reality check. You also see this with people who are like, “Oh yeah Jeff is going to get me that job”. You can’t totally rely on other people to get you a job, you have to do some work yourself.

I guess those are really the only 2 big factors that I can think of right now, laziness is a huge factor in why so many people are not happy with their situation. Helping yourself out whether it be financially, mentally, or even physically is not easy, but if you don’t even try then you will never know how far you can go. That is why I continually worked on my websites and even now when I am happy I am still working hard to make things even better for myself. Hopefully some of you will do the same.

I know I am guilty of this but I am also in college trying to better my situation. Although to be fair I have made a good bit of money online through various means, not enough to live off of but enough to be pay some bills which makes life overall less stressful.

I just get annoyed at people who constantly complain but are totally unwilling to do a thing about it. Not having any money to go to college/tech-school with can be a problem but there are a ton of low interest loans and grants you can get.

Plus if you really don’t have any idea of what you want to do go get a Liberal Arts degree and find a decent job that gives you benefits, etc. Then when you figure out what you want to do go take night classes and get your specialized degree.

Thats because most of the people are noobs who settle for what they can get. They are conditioned by school to be docile employees. They do not “strive for more” because they are just not looking for it. Don’t waste your time helping people like that who are just not “into money” or not hungry. Also, they don’t feel enough pain to want to make a sustained change - only they can help themselves. Deep down I’m sure rich folks who made it sure like making fun of them though. In the end we need people like that - we need good obedient employees.

You are exactly right Bob, I struggle with being lazy sometimes too.

I had an old friend who was always complaining about his situatoin, how people would get fired from his workplace or leave and start somewhere else at a higher pay grade. I tried to encourage him to put out resumes and better his situation, but he just wouldn’t do it…

I have noticed that same thing Dave. In high school I had a friend who made minimum wage and complained about it constantly. Whenever I told him to quit and look elsewhere he would just say “this is just until I finish school”. Five years later and he has advanced… from the Shop n’ Save to the Giant Eagle (both Pittsburgh area grocery stores) up the street making $1.00 more per hour than he did in 2002 and he still lives with his parents with no real hope of moving out any time soon.

I really think that people like that have simply lost all drive to succed. People like that need to be just slapped in the face and told to go learn to be a plummer, electrician, medical assistant, highway worker, or SOMETHING!

If you don’t like your situation, go to extreme lengths if you have to, but change it.

Great article, Bob. I just recently made the transition from being employed to being self-employed. It definitely takes a “different” kind of person, one who is not happy to be employed in the traditional corporate structure. I am too independant and have too much on my mind to fool around working for anyone else.

That is the part that bugs me the most too — people who will complain all day, but never do anything about it. The people I respect the most are those who have the power to change their attitudes and improve their life. You have the right attitude and I can tell you are going to succeed.

I’m glad to see some people agree with me. A lot of people who are guilty of this deny it all the time!
