Find a Good Niche
This could be one of the most important things when starting a blog. There are a lot of factors when selecting a niche, but the most important in my opinion is to write about something you are interested in. That why it is easy for you to write about a topic you know a lot about the topic. Another factor when selecting a niche is how many other blogs are there like it. If there are a lot it will be hard to break into that niche, but it still can be done.

One thing that really pisses me off when people diss blogs saying they didn’t make anything off their blog is because they did not update it that much, quit being lazy! More successful blogs post at least once at day if not more. If you cannot keep up with a set blogging schedule than blogging might not be for you.
Write Quality Posts
If you want people to read your blog you better write some quality posts. One paragraph little articles are not going cut it. When people come to your blog then want to read quality posts that are interesting, these types of posts will keep them coming back. If you are writing about something you are interested in and know a lot about writing quality post should not be a problem.
Put in the Work
So many people think blogging is extremely easy, but it can be tough. I know that it is easier than the normal 9-5, but I really don’t believe you can have a successful blog if you are only working a couple hours a day on it. Most successful bloggers take a few hours just to write a good quality post. Not to mention all the other time they spend researching topics and tweaking their site.
A Good Layout Helps
A lot of times when I am looking for new blogs I can be turned off or on by the blogs layout. Remember people say first impressions are everything. Wordpress is the standard for blogging these days so make sure you have a visually appealing blog template. Most people prefer black text on a white background. If you have some money you can even get a custom blog design made. Unique Blog Designs make really good layouts.
If you put in the work, update your blog regularly, and write quality posts making money from a blog should not be a hard thing to achieve. Good luck to all the aspiring bloggers out there!

Great post Bob, I couldn’t agree more. I’ve heard a lot of people say that their blogs weren’t successful and when I ask them why I find out that they didn’t update often. That is suicide for bloggers, keep updating, but don’t update too much…

The computer niche is so oversaturated sometimes.
Meh, a small number of bloggers can make a good amount of money with their sites, but not many. Like Sean said, there’s a lot of problems nowadays with over-saturation.
Aaaand that’s what I get for running two sites. Posting the wrong linkback =P
If blog becomes successful, it can give good money otherwise it can be just like any other site which is not giving so much money.
Great post, but I disagree with your “should not be a hard thing to achieve” statement. It’s hard when your an impatient person. I find myself doing daily posts, fine, but the problem comes in with getting the site out there and known.
Making some money isn’t hard but few people are able to create sites or blogs that make more than some beer money.
Getting a site/blog off the ground usually takes quite some time and I’ve noticed that most people who start making sites or blogs for money tend to quit after a couple of months when they notice that the hours they put in every day don’t lead to hundreds of dollars of income a month.
Great post Bob - yes people you CAN make a living online. I do and so do people like Bob & Ashley : ) It does take motivation, determination & well a little brain power - but it’s worth it! DON’T give up, that is really the key here!

Great tips. I don’t make much directly from blogs. (Which means I don’t use adsense or sell ad space.) I mere use them as feeder sites to drive traffic to my main sites or just a place to provide content.
Thanks for the useful tips. Need to remember bloggers that if money is concern there is no easy way around it. either you work for it or you just continue to say it doesn’t work or worth the time. i remember your tips when i setup my blog later on.
